Congress to Convene its Virtual Seventh Special Session

PALIKIR, POHNPEI. August 7, 2020 – Speaker Wesley W. Simina has called for the 7th Special Session of the 20th Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia to convene via remote on August 17, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. Chuuk and Yap time and 11 a.m. Kosrae and Pohnpei time.

Prior to the adjournment of the 6th Special Session in July, the Members had agreed to hold a special session to address the issues that remain pending before the Body.  In accordance to the Congress Rules of Procedures, Section 2 of Rule 1, special sessions of the Congress can be called either by the Speaker or the President – on the written request of two-thirds of the Members.  Reaching the required numbers, the Speaker has informed the other Branches of the National Government along with the state governments that the 7th Special Session of the 20th Congress will convene in Palikir for five days beginning July 17, 2020.

The purpose for of the special session is to continue to review the Amended Public Health Emergency Declaration in light of new developments; in addition to addressing the Committees’ work on the FY2021 budget; and to consider other matters of importance to Congress.

With respect to the advisories from the State Governments and the FSM National Government discouraging public gatherings and encouraging social distancing, the 7th Special Session of the 21st Congress is closed to the general public.
