Speaker Wesley W. Simina, FSM Congressional Delegation Meet with Speaker Gojkovic of Serbia

Belgrade, Serbia. October 12, 2109. – The Congressional delegation from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), prior to the commencement of the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on October 13 – 17, 2019 in Belgrade, Serbia, met with The Honorable Madam Speaker Maja Gojkovic and other Serbian officials as part of its parliamentary diplomacy efforts.

Speaker Wesley W. Simina and his delegation’s courtesy visit with Speaker Gojkovic was primarily to reinforce parliamentary relations between the two national legislative bodies.

During the courtesy meeting, Speaker Simina thanked Madam Speaker Gojkovic and the National Assembly of Serbia for its preparatory work and hosting of the 141st IPU Assembly in Belgrade, Serbia, wishing her, the IPU, and participating national parliamentarians around the world a successful and productive assembly.

The two Speakers also discussed ways to improve parliamentary friendships between the two bodies, best parliamentary practices, as well as legislative engagements with their respective governments on matters of mutual interests.

The FSM Congress delegation also met with Dr. Vladimir Cizelj, Special Adviser to Serbia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of Vlatacom, a private research and development company in Serbia, on information sharing for better cooperative exchanges between the two countries.

The FSM congressional delegation upon its return to the FSM plans to inquire the relevant departments of the FSM Government on its initiatives, if any, on establishing diplomatic relations with the Republic of Serbia. Currently, the governments of the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Serbia does not have established diplomatic relations and a visa waiver agreement in place.

The Congressional delegation to the 141st IPU Assembly led by Speaker Simina, included Senator Joseph J. Urusemal, Senator Robson U. Romolow, Senator Dion G. Neth, Senator Aren Palik, Legislative Counsel T. Lam Dang, Information Officer Andy P. Choor, and special guest Vincent A. Figir – Speaker of the Yap State Legislature.
